Well, the ‘dae somethin’ we ken’ just means ‘do something we know’ – in other words, do Elvis, do the Beatles, do any pop evergreen. There’s a possibility that independent music propagated over internet may one day be widely enough known. Orwell was VERY prophetic with the woman singing the manufactured song in ‘1984’ – she sang it as if it was an old familiar song, Winston Smith knew it was a product of the state music factory. Fortunately in Scotland (where I am) traditional and folk music is not a minority sport, it’s familiar to almost everyone, so it is not necessary to sink to doing the two most widely sung Van Morrison numbers every time. I know enough traditional stuff to give them things they know, and things which surprise them. Most of my friends don’t and are very happy to do the standards.

But – they are now watching YouTube videos.
